The Indian Friendship Centre’s Alternative High School is housed in downtown Sault Ste. Marie in a Native cultural setting. Learning takes place in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere where the teachers and students work together.

The program is based on individualized, independent learning courses that students can complete at their own pace. Native cultural components are incorporated into the program.

Opportunities in co-operative education help students decide on career choice. Students have the option of attending Bawating for mainstream courses, or e-learning is also available.

School Partnership

The Urban Aboriginal Alternative High School was developed as a partnership with the Algoma District School Board for urban aboriginal, Inuit, and Métis people to have the opportunity to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma in a relaxed and cultural atmosphere.

Our Mission Statement

The mission statement of the Indian Friendship Centre Alternative High School is to create a comfortable, educational environment that is sensitive to the needs of the Native student.

All areas of life – mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, and social – are addressed so that the student can become an active member of the community, obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D.) and integrate into the career world or continue educational pursuits at the post secondary level.

Urban Aboriginal Alternative High School can help you earn your credits for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD):

▪ English - Grades 9 - 12 ,

▪ Mathematics - Grades 9 – 12,

▪ Business Studies - Grades 9 – 11,

▪ Science - Grades 9 – 11, Arts - Grades 9 – 10,

▪ Social Science & Humanities,

▪ Canadian & World Studies - Gr. 9-11,

▪ Health & Physical Education,

▪ Guidance & Career Education ,

▪ Cultural Outdoor Education,

▪ Food and Nutrition, and

▪ MPLAR (at least 18 years to qualify)

Roles and Responsibilities of Students:

Students should be a least 16 years of age and out of school for at least one month. Part-time students must attend a minimum of 7.5 hours per week and full-time students must attend a minimum of 15 hours per week. Students must also complete 2 lessons per week and participate in monthly student meetings.
