Cultural Based Programs & Services

Indigenous Healing & Wellness

To ensure that the healing and  wellness needs of the local Indigenous community are addressed by implementing the Indigenous Healing and Wellness Strategy at the local level to reduce family violence, promote healthy lifestyles, culture based programming and healing. Programs Provided include: Weekly Sewing/Drumming, Anger Solutions, Traditional Health Program, Supportive Peer Counselling, Traditional Peer Counselling, Elders visits, Applying to Healing Lodges, and Advocacy.

 

Indigenous Mental Health

Culturally relevant and community specific mental health services to the Urban Indigenous  community  in Sault Ste. Marie. Traditional Mental Health  program  offers a cultural space for individuals with mental health and addictions issues to find the help they need in moving towards a healthier lifestyle. Individuals of all ages can access the program. The program also works to make better connections between urban Indigenous community and non-Indigenous health services. This is done by educating non­ Indigenous staff about the specific needs of Anishnabe people and creating partnerships to connect them with the Friendship Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. These programs can help individuals in the following ways:

  • One-on-one consultation regarding treatment options, treatment centres, non-aboriginal health services as well as meeting and understanding doctors instructions and notes for prescriptions.
  • Culturally based services and support groups, including wholistic healing through medicine wheel teachings on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, and participation in cultural activities such as drumming circles, ceremonies, and feasts.

 

Drug & Alcohol Prevention

To provide substance abuse services through education, prevention, and intervention to Indigenous individuals and their families within the community. To provide healthier alternatives for a substance free lifestyle. To develop and present substance abuse education programs to the community. To enhance inter-agency referrals and networking within the substance abuse community in addressing substance abuse. To promote alternative lifestyles by providing substance free social activities. To provide a continuum of care for substance abuse to individual and their families.
